This video is taken from a recent presentation to a group of doctors, during which Dan discussed the trap of contingent self-esteem – a trap that many people who are highly invested in their work role can fall into. It’s important to maintain some differentiation between your identity and your role and – where possible – to avoid the “identity fusion” that can occur when the two overlap. This was certainly the case for Dan as a member of the military and caused him to lose my identity when he discharged from the military.
